Statement of the CEO and Chairperson Global Environment Facility Carlos Manuel Rodríguez about the decisions at COP16.2.

“The Global Environment Facility serves to meet the needs of Parties, as they strive for global environmental commitments, including the 2030 biodiversity targets. We welcome the decision reached in Rome and look forward to continuing to support effective and innovative solutions to the biodiversity crisis through the GEF Trust Fund and the Global Biodiversity Framework Fund (GBFF), which together have allocated resources to more than 140 countries since COP15.”

“The GEF has gone through a series of reforms in the Secretariat, and in its policies and processes, to better support countries’ capacities. The GEF has been listening carefully to CBD Parties and is committed to continued improvements in order to respond to their expectations and capacities needs. The establishment of the GBFF is a demonstration of GEF’s timely and efficient responsiveness to the COP. By December 2024, two years after COP 15, the GBFF had programmed over $200 million for 40 projects in 41 countries. The GEF family of funds, in the period from June 2022 to December 2024, approved $3.07 billion for projects in support to the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. These projects are expected to leverage more than $22 billion in co-financing, including $1.9 billion from the private sector.” 

“The GEF will do its utmost, in its upcoming GEF-9 replenishment and through the GBFF, to mobilize and efficiently allocate new and additional resources to support the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

Regreening the Planet one at a time please

Considering everything from regulated whaling to Sustainable Development to soil conservation to benefit sharing mechanism to indigenous peoples’ rights to Climate Change Adaptation, Human Wildlife Conflict Mitigation and more … all within the paradigms of Equitable growth, CITES, Human Rights, gender equality, Climate resilience, poverty eradication, gender sensitive land rights, are on the table at the United Nations Convention on Biodiversity in Cali Colombia, it certainly does not hurt to lend sharper focus to the Convention. The effort has been to focus sharply on SDGs 14, 15 and 17 for sure, but their corresponding targets and goals in themselves are a wide horizon. Its Curtains for COP 16 OF UNCBD at Cali Colombia

  By Malini Shankar Digital Discourse Foundation Cali, Colombia 2.11.24 Curtains are drawn close at Cali Colombia for the 16 th Conference of Parties at the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity. The “Parties” made a grand yet sincere attempt at putting People before the Planet – to be a democratic exercise. There are some bits of good news and some bad. There has been fiscal commitments to DSI or Digital Sequence Information, but Sandra Valenzuela of WWF said at a Press Conference on closing day that fiscal commitment is not the same thing as funding. If cop 16 does not resolve issues of funding we are sitting on a hot potato. COP 16 is all about implementation... 119 countries have submitted NBSAPs. 44 are revising. 65% have submitted NBSAPs. Except India, Iran, Russia and Argentina others have submitted national targets n NBSAPs. Resource mobilization arena nothing is agreed till everything is agreed. Global north n south have to agree ... New funds is not...
